All about tarnish

Tarnish is a thin layer that develops on copper to protect itself. Copper does not rust weaken and eventually flake away like iron based metals which is one of its amazing traits. Because the interior of your copper mug is RAW copper, it will tarnish or darken and patina over time. To slow this process, be sure to wash you cup after using AND dry the interior completely. All copper needs to tarnish is moisture and air. The interior will darken in a spotty random way. This does not effect copper’s ability to ionize into your water or the taste. You can allow the interior to darken, which most of our customer do, or you can remove it with lemon and salt, Barkeepers Friend, or Wrights Copper Cream, are some of our favorites. Usually about 5-10seconds of rubbing with a soft cloth and the above cleaner of your choice and the interior will look like new again.

If you remove the tarnish it is something you will need to do on a regular basis. If you allow your cup to tarnish, and you see it starting to turn colors like blue’s and green’s then that is usually due to some impurity that has found its way onto your copper sometimes from the environment of something in your water. If this happens, simply remove all the tarnish using the above instructions and the interior of your cup will be bright and shinny. PLEASE NOTE, if you allow your cup to tarnish, please continue to clean it regularly with warm water and mild soap. This will not remove the tarnish but will keep it clear which is important.
