Can copper rust?

Copper does not rust, ever!  Only metals like iron/steel rust, which is caused by oxidation, when these metals are exposed to moisture and oxygen.  A great example of this is the Golden Gate Bridge which millions of people visit annually, and enjoy walking across.  Along the way you will see holes in the extremely thick steel where rust has literally eaten away the metal.  Raw uncoated copper will tarnish or patina, which is a very thin darkening layer that creates a protective coating to prevent real damage to the metal so you never have to worry about rust with your copper drinkware..  

The interior of your copper mug has a raw copper interior and WILL tarnish when exposed to moisture and air.  To postpone this, simply DRY thoroughly after washing.  Any missed or damp areas have everything they need to start tarnishing.
